BHEL Wins INR10bn Contract For Hydro Power Project In Bhutan

Published: 08-Feb-2010

Indian state-run utility Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has secured a contract for supplying electro-mechanical equipment to 1,200MW Punatsangchhu-I hydroelectric in Bhutan.

The INR10bn order, which was placed on BHEL by Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority (PHPA), Bhutan, includes manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of the electro-mechanical equipment for the hydroelectric project.

The power project, which is located around 80km from Thimphu on the left bank of the Punathsangchu River in Western Bhutan, is a run-of-the-river scheme. It is being set-up under a bilateral agreement between the Royal Government of Bhutan and Government of India, BHEL said.

Following the contract, BHEL's Bhopal facility will manufacture and supply six Francis Turbines and Generators of 200MW each and associated equipment, while the company's electronic division at Bangalore will supply the control system for the project.

The contract is said to be BHEL's single largest contract in the hydro electric power generation business segment.
