Alstom, Metals & Engineering Corporation sign 3000MW turbo generator contract for Grand Renaissance project
Alstom has secured a turbo generator supply contract from Ethiopian firm Metals & Engineering Corporation (METEC) for the 3000MW first phase of the Grand Renaissance power plant.
The scope of the €250m contract includes the supply of eight 375MW turbines, eight generators and managing the installation of all electromechanical equipment for the plant during the first phase.
Located on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia, the facility will be operated by the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation and is expected to be commissioned over a three-year period starting July 2013.
Alstom Renewable Power president Jérome Pécresse remarked that the contract will strengthen the company's position in the African hydropower market.
"With the supply of the first high-capacity turbines in a short lead time, Alstom demonstrates its ability to meet the country's power needs as quickly as possible," said Pécresse
The Grand Renaissance power plant is expected to have a total installed capacity of 6,000MW when fully completed.
